Most military recruits are (were) from military families, or from places where there is a history of people serving. Many areas of the country have never personally known a veteran or known anyone with family in the military. When they lose the generational families (like they lost mine) they will start having big problems. They’ll suck people in with bonuses and lowered standards, and fill slots with ridiculously fast/unqualified promotions, but that’s the group from last time who will now be leading this next batch. So the train wreck continues. It’s very sad, actually, but I discourage everyone I can from joining up right now.

I think it’s a field where some people truly have a calling for it, and love the people they care for. They’re the ones who stay with it. It’s a numbers game where I live. Our part of the state gets beat down every time by Detroit and Ann Arbor. Plus they cheat and steal. I’m not going to leave, this is my home, but I totally get why some people head out of states that are even more communist than mine.
Being a CNA in a nursing home is a shit job. It’s hard physical and emotional work, they take a lot of physical and verbal abuse from patients who have dementia or other issues, and they generally have admin who staff and pay the bare minimum. Child care and elder care are two sides of the same coin, where they are chronically understaffed and underpaid, and try to blame the workers and grift off the government rather than run their business properly. Are you going to change an old woman’s poopy diaper while she slaps you and cusses you out? Or have a senile old man grope you while you try and give out meds? For less than you could make at Walmart? It’s crazy.
