A short, powerful answer is usually the right one, particularly when you're surrounded by people baiting you. You sound confident, and it forces your opponent to grill you, exposing themselves to potential humiliation and exposure. Also it's great for sound bites.
I get Christianity's big on "authority from God," but it's bizarre how many of them won't even fight for their religion. If their God's not worth a fine or a misdemeanor arrest, why should I care? It's bizarre to me. The Hasidic Jews have similar teachings on authority, but they all stood up for themselves in NYC.
