There will always be a rug they can and likely will pull out from underneath you.
If not Cloudflare, then your IP transit, or your colocation, or your ICANN, or simply blackhole your IP/ASN
Will need to do what the thepiratebay did and have tens/hundreds of proxies hosting the web frontend, whitelisted to hit a centralized or distrubuted sql server.
Cloudflare is not the only game in town, and it is possible to find a smaller/medium sized DDoS solution that will be a more personal relationship with the owner.
Building your own DDoS solution would involve a team of engineers, 6 or so at $100-200K per year, plus about $20-50k/month in bandwidth capacity say 100-500gb/s and maybe $250K-1M in hardware.
This is a complex issue, while yes it is true you can manage your own DDoS defense, you need the capacity to do so, attacks can come in such great size that you have no way to even deal with them as the data pipeline is saturated. This is what gave rise to cloudflare...
When the cost of 10G + sized links/hardware became affordable enough to have hundreds and even thousands of gb/s of capacity now you have the pipe to take the attack, and drop the bad packets and allow the good ones.
Filtering the traffic can be done with automation and hardware like RioRey or Palo Alto and Radware, but in the end you need a team of qualified engineers who can analyze the attack vector and tune the hardware to drop the attack.
Servers themselves need to be hardened to be able to withstand a much higher PPS and to drop bad requests that get through, like distributed syn-ack.

There are also many other 3rd parties that could help filter traffic much like what cloudflare does, and possibly even better. A simple duck-duck-go search would reveal these.
Should start calling the MSM news teams and FBI/911 all around the country reporting any groups of people standing outside buildings...
Hello 911, what's your emergency...
Those damn Trumpers are at it again, they have placed Applebee's under siege, its an insurgency...
I guess it is really hard to know what is going on. They might have his kids/grandkids in a room somewhere with a gun to their heads. Who fucking knows.
Bottom line, he changed the world... not just the USA but the whole fucking world in 4 years, with both hands tied behind his back.
It was never meant to handle real traffic, the goofy ajax loader 99 times out of a hundred fails to load any content, sure they are growing fast but they should just turn that shit off and cache the main pages, people would rather read content than get up to the second like/comment counts.
Without knowing how much hardware/cpu they need to run the traffic they have it is hard to know but I am sure that with some smart use of cache, redis, and a db designed for tens of millions of requests per day the site would not be the steaming pile of dogshit it is now
I have heard over the last several months people who were suspicious of the founders and money behind Parler, and then there was Code Monkey's comments.
What if Parler was a honey pot, a life raft with a hidden leak designed to sink at just the right moment in time.
