I was talking about the modern m16, as I assumed that the commenter I was replying to was talking about modern M16 style rifles not ones from 60 years ago. If the design was still so flawed would the US as well as 80 other countries still use it. I know they had issues in the beginning but now AR style rifles are very reliable. As for the AK the reliability isn’t a myth, but it isn’t as legendary as it’s made out to be. The mythos around the rifle is that “it will fire with a pound of sand in it” or “after its been left covered in mud” which simply isn’t true. As for the STG vs AK one has a tilting bolt while the other has a rotating one. The form follows function which is why on the surface the rifles looks similar, was the STG an inspiration for the AK, almost certainly; but the AK was more than just a 2nd generation STG

Besides the overall intent of the weapon, firing an intermediate cartridge, semi / full auto, removable box magazine, the AK and STG-44 don’t have a lot in common design wise. The AK actually operates more similar to an M1 garand. What the captured Germans did do for the AK was help with the stamping process. Actual AK-47s were milled guns and expensive to make. AKMs (the upgraded 1950s- now guns) were stamped, and the Germans were the only ones with that experience. Also the AKs extreme reliability is another myth, as is the M16 always not working. Both guns work very well when taken care of. The AK fares better after not being cleaned for long periods of time, but when it comes to mud and other dirty places the more sealed action of the M16 keeps dirt out which makes it more reliable. Check out the InRangeTV mud tests of both rifles.

By the time bi-metal erodes your barrel the cost difference between brass and steel should be enough to get a new one(idk about with 2020 prices though) Anyhow the ammo that lets you practice shooting is the best ammo, and if it’s steel then so be it. I keep 5 mags of quality brass 193 loaded for an emergency but at the range I use steel case
