When I go to any mid sized city I do the mall test. I wander around one day during the week for a few hours and on a Saturday for a few hours and study the people. Knoxville passed the test two years ago when I was there. The people seemed normal and cheerful. It seemed like a throw back to my town back in the 1980s.

I moved from CA to TX in 1995. While TX is still great, if I was moving today it would be Tennessee. They have a good combination of conservative values, low taxes, a booming economy, and mountains, rivers, and forests. TN is a little too cold for me, but heck, even Phoenix is too cold for me in the winters.
