My first experience of this was in church....

The teacher didn’t know the questions so was just as happy not to take any. This was the first time I realized that I didn’t care if everyone around me made fun of me or didn’t like me - they were conformist morons.
It happened again in Boy Scouts - who wants to earn badges when you can play basketball in the cultural hall? Achievement and excellence were again abandoned by my troop for mediocrity. I killed it in scouts, got my eagle rank etc, but not because of any help from my troop.
It happened again when I went to University - I went advanced placement. One day I was home during the day and ran into my high school friends in the local delinquent smoking garage - they were all making the jump from weed to heroin. As I had a cigarette watching them slide into being junkies one of them actually said to me -
“Why do use such big words? Why do you want to be so smart? Don’t you know that dumb is cool”?
That was the last time I ever saw any of them. I walked out of the garage and realized someone had said it out loud - I don’t belong there because I interrupt their ability to feel cool but be mediocre.
