I’d go one further and say we never had the ability. Looking at something objectively requires one to detach themselves from all the emotional hype and personal feelings surrounding a particular topic or case.
America and the world in general generally never had the ability to do that. Emotion drives people and motivates people. Throughout History it’s been people manipulating emotions that have driven and controlled nations. Whether for good and ill.
Emotion is fundamental to the human condition so much so that we regard the people with the ability to look objectively at something unclouded by emotion as having something wrong with them.
Another example of a self-inflicted problem which rests solely on the shoulders of the people of New York City.

Because the U.S more or less functions as the defacto Military arm of NATO. Supplies the majority of funding, training, and equipment.
While most of NATOs other members, with a few exceptions, have let their armed forces degenerate to the point they’d struggle to operate domestically in their own nations much less facing down a Russian Armored Division in Eastern Europe, or Chinese Warships and troops in the pacific.
Plus it’s generally considered a smart move to have the guy with the firepower on your side.
