So here's the background of the forgiveness as someone who gives out these loans. The Farm Service Agency (branch of the USDA) gives out loans to beginning farmers and farmers who cannot get credit elsewhere. The interest rates for the loans are anywhere from 1-2.5% interest and we are very flexible with payments (one payment per year after harvest usually and we can accept interest only payments for the first couple years if you are establishing an orchard or a vineyard). I'm proud of the work we do because we helped a lot of farmers get their operations out of the ground. We teach them how to keep a balance sheet, track income and expenses and set them up for long term success. Less than 2% of our loans go bad because we do so much work with the borrowers. With this new bill anyone who is designated a Socially Disadvantaged Applicant (SDA) will have their loan forgiven up to 120%. An SDA is anyone who is a non-white male (Veterans count as SDA). Over 60% of our loans will disappear over night for no fucking reason. This is modern day redlining and is extremely racist/sexist.
