Power grid via EMP goes, just 2 nukes about 20 miles up. That divides the continental US into 4 sectors. Maybe about OH and CO. Of course they could use more, to better cover north and south. DC and TX are both too near the extremities.

I think it's propaganda that they currently have hypersonic missiles that actually function. They did mount a railgun to a ship before we did, but it isn't functional either. Might fire a few shells.
