So they are protected by the establishment. So, the only recourse for any opposition relies on funding by a friendly party. Who would be a friendly party that is not a part of the ruling party?

The only thing I can think to do is possibly start a party and try to attract backers that aren't communist sympathizers. It would be a long term plan and probably wouldn't work because of counter intelligence operations. The FBI would plant someone in the party, have them do something bad, then remove the party.
