It's not typically infrastructure security that's "farmed out", but I agree in principle either way. If you can't be 100% sure of what's happening with your data, you shouldn't be using that product. But that said, if you're an overworked network engineer who can't get management to acknowledge the need for more engineers so you don't have to work 60-70 hours a week and be on call 24/7... tools that help you manage a network more efficiently can be a godsend.
Solar Winds is used to monitor network performance and health and is extremely helpful in finding and even preventing issues on networks (especially large scale networks). Theoretically, (and I'm only speaking from my knowledge of working with SolarWinds Orion) they should have limited access to your equipment, the equipment should only be sending certain info to the Solar Winds servers about packet flow, collisions, port/vlan status, etc.. and even that should be secure. But there's always constant upgrades to software and of course, everything is proprietary.. so nobody can really know 100% what's going on behind the scenes. My guess is that if SolarWinds is compromised, there's probably a bunch of network hardware manufacturers that are as well. Cisco, Meraki (owned by Cisco), HP, Juniper.. probably a lot more.

Holy shit, SolarWinds is used by like every large company out there to monitor their networks. You basically hand over the keys to your network to them for fancy webpages that show you your network and network stats at a glance. If SolarWinds is compromised, every company that uses it also is, and that's a lot.
