Growing up my parents would always look for a 2-3 yr old car to buy, by then the depreciation would have made it work buying compared to new.
Go look at the price of new and used (2-3 yrs) now, the price difference is so small that is not worth it. The used car industry was decimated by cash for clunkers and I don't ever think it will recover.
