I would either agree or disagree with you depending on what you mean by "multiculturalism". If you mean multiple cultures, yes, multiple cultures in a nation leads to Balkanization.
But if you mean multiple ethnicities, I think I'd disagree. It's about assimilation, not ethnicities. The American "white" ethnicity is a mess of all kinds of white people from all over Europe. The idea of "white" began in the US, European whites have hated each other to the point where they fought 2 world wars over it.
The original English population is now about 17% of the population. Because the US is ridiculously good at absorbing other ethnicities and making them Americans. Over the years, the US has absorbed the Scots, the Irish, the Italians, the Hungarians, and so many more. Hell, the US is technically more ethnically German than English (33% of the population). But those German pedes make up the Rust Belt and the reddest states in the Northwest interior.
But you don't see anyone speaking German, and all of these people are American patriots. Hell, Trump himself is descended from Germans. The problem nowadays is that we don't assimilate like we used to.
