Now that I'm seeing a cleaner pic of the explosion, I don't agree with my initial assessment (different thread) of propane or gasoline. I thought the licks of red I saw were flame behind smoke.
We know we have a pre-existing fire before the explosion. The explosion throws a red-brown cloud that doesn't appear to have strong secondary combustion/explosion. There's some orange tips in this vid, but it's not rolling flame in the other vid.
I hate to tell you, guys, but I don't know what this was. The fire set off something, but I really don't know what.

Sound of shockwave is rather long. It's a "long thunder" sound rather than a "single boom" sound.
Most likely source: BLEVE. If I had to guess, I'd say a 18-wheeler hauling fuel or a large propane tank went off.

Depends. There are a number of county/state highways which run through the city center.
With a permit, police presence, and a posted detour I don't have much of an issue with this (again, in a city center).
No permits should ever be granted for an interstate, nor should any permits be issued for any major road outside of city limits, nor should anywhere a reasonable detour cannot be made.
Closing a local road for a peaceful protest requires a permit and (I believe, but not 100%) police presence for the roadblocks.
Without a permit, it's unlawful gathering as it restricts the free movement of others.
And dear god, if a city ever allows a permit to block an interstate, fuck them.

blocking the barrel can cause explosive consequences. Your barrel is going to look like a peeled banana if you're lucky. If you're not, the chamber will fail as well and you're getting shrap in the face.
Search for "blocked barrel gun" and check some of the images.
It's why a lot of hunters tape the muzzle of their hunting rifle. The tape will fly off, but if they ended up with a blockage from dirt in the barrel they could harm themselves significantly far away from help.
