I post this now years later feeding my four month old daughter who I pray never has to see a day that echoes in her life as this day does for so many of us.
At this point in 2001 I was sound asleep preparing to for another regular day as a sophomore in high school. Little did 15 year old me would soon see terror on a scale that until that point in my life was only found in books and movies. I remember distinctly starting out a normal day when halfway through my first period, my schools assistant principal came in looking slightly distraught and whispered something to my math teacher. They continued on for a couple of minutes and my math teacher proceeded to change the classroom tv from the clock to an actual news broadcast (which was odd because our tv system of course ran on closed circuit and didn’t receive cable). That was my first glimpse of the smoke rising above New York, the first plane had only just made its impact into the North tower.
Of course at that point the general consensus was fuck math we are watching this. We all sat there just blankly gazing at the tower thinking various thoughts. For me I wasn’t considering terrorism but feeling horrible for the people on that plane, in that tower and of course their families. The bell for class change rang out but none of us moved an inch. Less a few minutes later we hear the panicked voice broadcaster and watched in awe as another plane comes into frame and crashes into the south tower. The assistant principal still in the room tells us all to head to our next classroom and await an announcement.
My next class was just one floor up so I scurried up the stairs and took my seat at my chemistry workbench and locked eyes on the tv, now fully aware that something absolutely atrocious had taken place. We watched and prayed and did absolutely nothing else for what seemed like hours. My Dad paged me on the good ole Nextel to check and make sure everything was okay at the school and told me he was about to leave work to come pick my brother and I up. As we were talking that’s when the South tower fell, I pressed the walkie button and said Dad did you see that... the whole building just collapsed. Silence. Almost immediately the PA rang out with a heartfelt message which I fail to remember but it ended with we have contacted your families so please pack what you need and head to the lobby for emergency dismissal. Standing in the lobby with the entire schools population was loud, chatter was all over the place of course we all watched the North tower fall together. People screamed, some fell to their knees and cried...reactions that I can never forget. A day that I WILL NEVER FORGET.
My God have mercy on those poor souls lost that day, bring peace to their families and thank you for the heroes that sacrificed themselves to save whoever they could. Lord please bless our great nation and protect us from evil so our children never have to see such a horror. Hug your loved ones and say a prayer for those lost pedes... you never know when you won’t get another chance.
Dems need to forfeit and secede from the union (as it is planned). Certain counties were caught misspelling “Republican” by using an uppercase i to replace the lowercase L. This error voided all straight ticket republican ballots.
