The problem is they were doomed from the outset. There were no beasts of burden in the Americas. They would never have been able to reach the critical mass of population needed to truly launch beyond a tribalistic society. Consider how many acres of food per person per year is needed and then consider how many people per acre you need to produce that food. An ox team and a single man with a plow can do more work in one day than 20 men in a week. The Aztecs were genius when it came to astronomy and charting the stars, but their idea of farming was to strip farm the land and considering the tropical rainforest they settled on already had poor soil, their collapse was already happening by the time the Spanish showed up.
The Mississippi culture of 800-1000 years ago also springs to mind. They built massive earth mounds and settled the areas around what is now Southern Illinois, Western Kentucky and Southeast Missouri up to modern day St louis and south to Western Tennessee. They had similar growing pains, but in a much harsher environment with terrain that is mostly cold swamp land in the winter and rocky clay soil even fit for modern day farmers in the summer. They experienced a population explosion and couldn't feed the near guessed million mouths that inhabited even such a large territory. Without population centers that weren't completely dedicated to agriculture, hunting and gathering they could not produce the specialists needed to even start a system of writing, let alone feed every hungry mouth.
