The Shawnee Hills and Ozark ranges respectively. Away from roads and cleared fields for farming, the terrain is almost impassable when you factor in the deep swamp lands. To this day it is all largely forested even considering its population.
You are forgetting that several hundred years of redevelopment would need to occur between periods of collapse. With no system of writing, knowledge would be lost. Without population centers to develop specialists no system of writing would be started. It took well over 500 years for the Babylonians (using that term roughly to include Ur, Akkad, Sumer etc) to hammer out an alphabet. They achieved critical mass, the Mississipian culture, and almost every "native" culture would never reach that point beyond a few outliers. Systems of writing existed, but they were not widely spread beyond the borders of their empires or the class of society that used it. Which class used writing in the Aztec civilization? Religious class. Which caste used writing in Babylon? Merchant class. One spreads far and wide, the other is restricted. One survives, the other goes extinct.

They had similar growing pains, but in a much harsher environment with terrain that is mostly cold swamp land in the winter and rocky clay soil even fit for modern day farmers in the summer. They experienced a population explosion and couldn't feed the near guessed million mouths that inhabited even such a large territory. Without population centers that weren't completely dedicated to agriculture, hunting and gathering they could not produce the specialists needed to even start a system of writing, let alone feed every hungry mouth. Modern revisionists of course attribute their collapse to European plauges, but this is bull shit on the highest order.
There is no real guessing at how many times that story played out over and over through the centuries in that area. To this day it is common place to find arrow heads in spears turned up by modern day farmers. It is in fact so casual occurrence in that region of the country that some historical societies that I have had dealings with in that area turn away donations of these artifacts. Content to catalogue them and let them go to private collections. It is safe to say, given the time frame the area was inhabited, no less than 4 (by my personal estimation) Mississipian type culture's rose and fell over 3,000 years. This cycle if civilizational collapse would still be happening to this day and would of continued until humanities extinction.
