Sweden public health officials never said masks don’t work. In fact they say that people should wear them when using crowded public transportation for example.
The 1968 flu killed 100,000 people over a span of one year and a half, from July 1969 to Winter 69/70. Covid is set to kill about 4 times as much in the US in the same time span. And that’s with mask wearing among other measures. That’s the difference for you.
Simple : because masks don’t protect at 100% and that’s why there are several measures in place that each decrease the risk of catching and transmitting the virus.
With your same non-reasoning you could say : if washing hands works, why standing 6 feet apart?
Baffling that almost a year into this pandemic, some people still don’t get the very basics on how viruses work. Sad.

I’ll explain the misconception.
Flu is low this year because more people wear masks than usual.
However, COVID19 is much more contagious and deadly than the flu, and that’s why even if everyone wore their masks, we still would have more deaths than what the flu does every year. That’s why other measures are needed and that’s why at the very least, everyone should wear a mask, which is unfortunately not the case currently.

COVID-19 has killed the same amount of Americans in less than three months. And that’s with a strict lockdown. One look at a graph showing the evolution of cases and deaths is enough to understand that it would have been much worse than this awful situation without the lockdown.

It’s not average flu season.
On average, the flu kills 40,000 per year in the US.
We are more than double that in a quarter of the time. So 8 times more deadly. And with the lockdown too! Imagine without the lockdown!
Covid isn’t influenza so no, they are not lumping data together, as the numbers clearly show.
