I think you’re on track. My theory all along has been that he played to win 2016 (of course, total Trump) but that he knew the deep state would stop it and he could blow the whole damned thing up. Except... he won. What was his election night statement? Something along the lines of sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business. Was he sitting there saying WTF, are you serious? The CEO of Overstock recently said that Hillary was supposed to win but someone turned off the steal and that he knows who that someone was. Did whoever turned it off get inside info that trump was going to bring down the whole house of cards if he lost? If not, who and why would someone turn off the steal and risk Trump over Hillary? But then it comes down to 2020, and why were they so bold this time with the steal? Is it because they know he’s bringing it down anyway so go for the Hail Mary?

The theory of not having a presidential election and what would likely follow has been analyzed but I don’t remember the reference. The pres and VP would leave office at the end of their term as required by the constitution. That leaves the constitutional order of succession which would fall to the Speaker of the House. The reality of it all would actually be a constitutional crises that most likely would get decided by the Supreme Court.
