'Beta Features' is a setting that we added last week so that we can release potential or unperfected changes to a small audience.
You can opt in on the settings page.
I understand most of us don't care about Reddit anymore, but I can't resist an opportunity to shine more light onto things that Reddit are trying to keep quiet.
I might have some details wrong, but here's the TL;DR:
-
A moderator of r/ukpolitics linked to an article from the Spectator, which "contained a three-word mention, in passing, of a minor British public figure, expelled from both the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party" (not knowing this was a Reddit admin)
-
The moderator was permanently suspended for "doxxing"
-
They later discovered that Reddit had hired this individual from the article, and therefore considered it doxxing.
-
Turns out, if you mention this minor public figure (turned Reddit admin) anywhere on the site, you will get permanently banned.
... which isn't the bad part. The new Reddit admin (Aimee Challenor) allegedly:
- is married to a literal, self-admitted pedophile who writes sex stories about kids (tweet: https://i.imgur.com/j2GXHtW.jpg)
- hired her father as elections agent after he was charged for holding a 10 year old girl captive in his "torture den" where he electrocuted her while playing out his sadomasochistic fantasies ("subjected the child to a campaign of abuse which included tying her from a beam, whipping her and giving her electric shocks.")
- started off as just a volunteer moderator for child/teen-focused subreddits before becoming a Reddit employee
Reddit's banning anyone who mentions the new admins name. Many large subreddits are going private in protest of the admins. The admins just put out a statement clarifying the ban policy but no comment on why they hired (and still are employing) an allegedly avid supporter of child rapists. More subreddits are continuing to close. Could be interesting!
We just released an update which changes how we handle SSO, a full description of the changes will be posted in c/changelogs once the update is stable.
Please use this thread to notify of any issues with things like being logged out, being redirected to the old domain, etc. If you have a bug report, please also include what browser (ex. "Chrome") and version (ex. "89.0.4389.90") you're using, and whether you're using any privacy blocking extensions.
If you do get "logged out", it may not be as it appears. There's two options: for some browsers, you can wait a few seconds and you'll be automatically logged back in. If you aren't, then you can click the sign in button, and you may be immediately logged back in without having to re-enter any details. This would be the intended behavior for some privacy focused browsers and extensions, as well as some old browsers.
Seen some concerns over a few things today. First, bit late but the lack of thumbnails for a few hours earlier was because we blew threw our agreed bandwidth limit for the proxies that we use for generating thumbnail images.
Normally when the thumbnail generator breaks (it hasn't in a while), we turn it back on, and the posts which were made when the thumbnail generator was offline will be processed retroactively.
In this case, the generator was never offline. It was still processing all new posts and setting their thumbnails to a blank (but processed) value.
We could have sent those posts back through to be regenerated, but we didn't.
The second concern is about how I am no longer on the mod list for The Donald (Patriots).
I am simply focusing on our wider mission to build Win into a social media platform to truly rival big tech. There's no meaningful change with regards to the mod list.
Brief maintenance shortly, all Win sites are expected to error for approximately two minutes.
Update: Done. Comment if anything is broken as a result.
Threads should be fixed.
Explanation: there was a bug where if you submit your comment as a reply to another comment which isn't in the same thread that you're trying to post yours to, the comment section may error out.
Brief maintenance
Feeds may temporarily be emptied, may be temporarily logged out.
Update: Maintenance over but leaving stickied. Comment if anything regarding the site is not working correctly.
Very brief maintenance
No interruption expected but we know how it be
Update 4 mins later: Okay, there was interruption. Deep down, I knew there would be. Maintenance over for now.
Win's image hosting was not accepting new images for 2-3 hours.
This should now be resolved.
The most requested community in the past week: WallstreetBets
We've been following the situation, not wanting to release a WSB community without having their mods onboard. Well, we still don't have their mods on board. We talked to them in mid-2020, but never came to an agreement.
We hope that they don't get banned from Reddit (we'd pick up a good portion of that traffic, so don't do it, Steve.)
Having said that... the WSB Discord server just got banned (for hate, by the way), and it's very possible that the subreddit suffers the same fate...
Our unofficial WSB Win site:
https://wsbets.win/ or c/wsbets
We've had some well known WSB users reach out asking for us to set this up, and even some people who have been involved in the running of WSB, but to be very clear, this is NOT officially affiliated with the WSB subreddit (but we'll hand it over to them when they want it)
Update: WSB is NOT banned on Reddit. It's private, which is normally a decision by the moderators.
Maintenance for next few minutes on all our sites.
No impact expected, but if something does go wrong, you will either see the sites briefly down, or the sites up with all feeds (such as the front page, new, rising, etc) empty.
Update: Concluded. Leaving stickied for a few more minutes
We're moving on from the rebranding situation. We don't want to leave all three posts stickied, but feel that they are still important, so this thread will highlight them all.
Excerpt from the initial announcement
Today is a big day - after five years, The Donald has rebranded to Patriots.win.
The first reason goes without saying... we're in a period of transition with yesterday's fraudulent inauguration. It will likely be some time before Trump gets back to actively communicating with his base, but we intend to do what we can to keep our part of this movement as active as ever.
We're not turning against Trump - not at all, our branding and our rules will remain the same for the immediate future. If Trump moves forward with the rumored Patriots Party, then we're perfectly positioned to fully support him in that endeavor.
It is our duty to step up and call out the disaster that this administration will be.
This rebrand does not indicate a change in moderation policy.
Help Patriots find their lost home
Unfortunately, the old domain got redirected to Gab and then to localhost, in response to our rebranding.
The good news is that we've retained at least 75% of our traffic, but it's still incredibly important to share the site with family and friends, and on any other social media platforms that you're a part of.
AMA about the situation
We also held an AMA about the situation, to address the concerns that users initially had. It is probably easiest to go to my profile as well as u/shadowman3001's, and read our responses directly from there.
We don't expect to get the old domain back, but we're moving on past this situation as this negativity helps no one.
Of course, if the old domain does come back in any form other than the redirect to here, it's not at all managed by our team, and we would suggest not taking part in it.
Thanks for putting up with all the bullshit, time to return to MAGA.
u/shadowman3001 and I will respond.
Please DON'T reply to other people's questions before we do. The comment ranking system may cause our replies to get hidden.
GOOD MORNING PATRIOTS!
Today is a big day - after five years, The Donald has rebranded to Patriots.win.
Don't worry: your accounts still work exactly the same, posts are the same, comments are the same, and the moderators are the same.
For now, we'll shift our focus to calling out China, censorship, and Biden's evils that the media doesn't cover. We now have a more important role than we have since November 2016.
It is our duty to step up and call out the disaster that this administration will be.
We also intend to do more to get people involved in elections at a local level, including the potential of more localized communities.
This rebrand does not indicate a change in moderation policy.
The secondary reason for our rebrand is a precarious situation with the old domain. The TL;DR is that we don't have control over it, and we cannot risk that any longer.
TheDonald.win was always meant to be owned by a group, not a single man. Unfortunately, the domain was registered by a single moderator during our initial discussions about the prospect of moving away from Reddit. We pushed for the domain to be transferred to a shared legal entity before we ever released, but despite promises, it never happened, and we launched our Reddit backup in a hurry without getting the situation resolved. We knew this would come back to haunt us - and perhaps it has.
The man with control of the domain left the mod team a week ago, out of fear for himself and those around him. While he stated just two days ago to the media that he'd hand the domain over to one of our moderators with whom he has a good relationship, unfortunately that wasn't true, and doesn't look like it will be happening.
Given all of the above, the risk is too great. We're rebranding to Patriots.win, which is legally owned by five of our long-term moderators.
This also explains why we were pushing the backup domains so hard, and why I made a post warning you all about the potential of an 'FBI Honeypot'. That absolutely remains true, but the number one threat was a backstabbing by our own people, which thankfully has not occurred.
The final obstacle is that since we don't have control over the old domain, we don't have the contact with our domain registrar (Epik) that we should have, and our previous contact (the man with control of the old domain) is no longer relaying any information to us from Epik.
We hope and expect that TheDonald.win will continue to point to our servers even after our rebranding. We're incredibly important to the MAGA movement, and it would be a great disservice to try to take us down, especially during this tumultuous time.
Brief maintenance
Intermittent service
If we ever "lose user account data" and ask you to sign up again (or remove account functionality entirely), then you should not trust this site any longer.
If this were to happen (extremely unlikely), then this site would now be an FBI honeypot.
You would also likely start to see "mods" (not us) encouraging all to post violence.
I believe you can trust this site for as long as your user accounts work, which will hopefully be forever.
Keep in mind that to verify whether your user accounts do work, you also need to check whether an incorrect password doesn't work.
We've modified our backup domains as follows:
You will now be notified when your reports are addressed.
If you report a user, you will receive an automated message when it's dealt with.
While the message won't currently tell you what action was taken, you will at least know that reports are looked at.
This does not apply to all Win sites, as communities can decide whether or not they want this feature enabled.
Brief maintenance momentarily
Will impact all of our sites
Update: Maintenance over... leaving this stickied for a few minutes, comment if you see anything weird
As we know, there have been a lot of media hit pieces recently, suggesting that our site is being used to plan "armed protests", "insurrections", etc.
I will say, personally - I had never heard about this Twitter HQ protest until the media started pumping articles out about it... and only one person attended, and they likely learned about it from the media... so that was clearly a hoax.
I had also never heard about the January 17th events until Twitter used them as their reason to ban President Trump. We haven't seen any organization of that on our sites.
Now, there's reports of armed protests at being organized at "all 50 state capitols" in the next week... and of course, they will try to blame us, again...
A few important notes:
- We do not allow illegal content, or organizing illegal acts.
- We have not seen any evidence of anything being organized through our site
- We have called out the many false flags to stay ahead, such as these two fake rallies.
We do ask that you report any content via the deport button (likely from false flag "handshake" accounts) which is inciting violence or organizing armed protests. Of course, we also expect our users to not post this content here.
The Donald has always followed directly in the President's footsteps. He says peace, so we seek peace.
We are aware that there are new pictures which are alleged to be Joe Biden's son with children.
This is a reminder to not post this illegal content of Joe Biden's son (or any other individuals, for that matter).
We may ban users who cannot abide by this.
