It's a 50's theory because in the late 60s at the convention for psychiatric proffessionals threre were gay rioters who were protesting homosexuality continuing to be called a psychosis. The medical profession at that point, banned further research on homosexuality and its origins.
This move was very effective for gay activism, and now people think that theories on causes of homosexuality due to environmental pressures are "old fashioned". Of course they are. For 50 years, research has not been allowed on the true causes.
