But having said that, there has to be a way for us to help them fund a better service for this website to be on. A limited donation system would work.

If the mods are worried about impropriety, then they could do a donation pool every month that caps at the cost of running a more powerful service. So if the monthly cost of hosting the site on a more powerful and secure service is $3000 a month, then donations would close for the month once donations hit that number.

And a donation limit should be implemented as well, such as any one user could only donate up to $10 or $20. This ensures that not a few, but hundreds of pedes have to donate in order to keep the site running, which means the site will never rely on only a few members. Also, this ensures no money could ever possibly be pocketed.
