It's definitely a religion in all but name. It has it's own theology and heresy is loudly decried. I think that people naturally gravitate to religion and in its absence, whether forced or by choice, that void gets filled with whatever.

Add the media to the puzzle and you could have Barry on video holding up both his American and Kenyan birth certificates while admitting to everything and CNN, NYT and WP would say that no crimes were committed and even if they were he was justified.
