A comparison keeps coming up between the Hatfield Federal Courthouse in Portland and Fort Sumter. I don't think it actually holds. At Fort Sumter, no one on either side was trying to kill anyone. One can track the transfer of authoritarianism from the Right to the Left in the past few decades by the move in the Jefferson-Hamilton opinion balance. In the '90s, the Right lionized Hamilton and cast aspersions on Jefferson, and the Left took the opposite approach. Now things are reversed. The Left idolizes Hamilton, and the Right finds a friend in Jefferson. At this point, the Left needs to erase Jefferson from history. He's too pro-liberty.
Perhaps the most relevant statistic in the debate over whether the USA is “institutionally racist” is how much more often one side rather than another employs statistics in the argument.
