I was also born and raised Catholic. My parents stopped taking me to church after I received first Communion because our only local Catholic church was radical left (they brought a Japanese survivor of Hiroshima in during Sunday service and he was condemning America in his little speech, so my mom and dad noped out for good at that point).
Though I maintained my faith the best I could, I did not return to church until I got married (Catholic church overseas) to my wife who is Orthodox. We baptized our kids in the Orthodox church. My wife did not regularly attend church either, but started going more often when we moved to the US. We wanted our kids to get a good moral foundation. Orthodox church is great because many of the communities are of Eastern European descent and almost all of the people in there despise communism and love America. I haven't met anyone yet who isn't voting for Trump.
I've essentially converted to Orthodoxy now which was no problem for me since the Catholic and Orthodox churches are very close doctrinally anyway. The differences are not major in my mind, so if you want to try a new church and stay true to what you've believed in, I think you will find a home in the Orthodox church.
Orthodox churches are essentially the same. We attend Romanian Orthodox church for confession, attend the Serbian Orthodox church on Sunday, have visited Russian and Greek Orthodox monasteries, etc. The only difference I've seen is the language the service is performed in when it isn't in English.
