Its only just starting. We don't know how many people get infected by each person. We don't know what percentage of people will require medical care after infection. We don't know if our healthcare system can manage the load if this things grows quickly. We don't know how many people will die.
This could be managed well and turn out better than predicted. It also could be terrible. For now we simply don't know enough and should err on the side of it being potentially terrible to ensure we're prepared.

Yes if you're young you're unlikely to die. I don't know many young people who don't care about people over 65 though. We should take it seriously until we know we're looking good.
