Yes, many smart devices do have this functionality to connect to the network. But they still require internet connectivity. Having them connect to the network is low risk if there is no internet connection.

So the Thermostat was used as a backdoor into a network.... This still requires an internet connection to the the network and thermostat.... Just technologically impractical.

This is exactly my point. Just because a thermostadt is in the closet doesnt mean anything. There has to be a connection to the outside world for this device to provide an attack vector into the network to the machines.
