Well, it's hard to argue with you. I tend to chalk it up to people being so conditioned to respond negatively to certain stimuli that their reflexive instinct is to downvote before they can even think about what they've just read. Another potential cause is virtue signalling which, sadly, has infected even rightist ranks. The more controversial the topic (like gays, women and Jews), the more likely it'll trigger someone to a downvote. I tend to downvote people who are being abusive, belligerent, or condescending assholes to fellow-posters.
