Look up the "Government Accountability Board" and "John Doe" investigation. They were literally spying on conservative talk show hosts in Wisconsin and raiding their homes as kids were going to school. 0 charges came from it, but for Wisconsinites it's patient zero of where we're at today.
The WI election commission is a unique animal. It came into existence in 2015/2016 after some hinky election shenanigans. It's a purely partisan body. As far as what powers the legislator vested them with, I don't know.
They can't, part of me regrets them not letting this pass so the SCOTUS could rule on it. Part of me questions the legal precedence, our election commission was created by the legislature, I don't have the time to research the authority we vested in them. But it could potentially be a losing battle.

My biggest takeaway from this was how the Venezuelans did it. Their internet went down for a few hours until they had the vote rigged and had cleaned up their mess. How does that reflect our situation, we "stopped counting" for 4 hours, and when the votes came back in, the fix was in, HOPEFULLY we didn't give them enough time to clean up their mess too.
