Assuming you don't actually store any authentication on TDW servers, the "authorities" could just compromise your database and/or authentication server, for example, and nobody would know.

Sure, you can say "anything can be compromised so give up" but security is built on redundancy. If the mods were more clear about things from the get go, had a warrant canary (with PGP encryption), and explained why they keep saying "if the site makes you re-login its compromised" - that would all help towards building better trust with the users.
