The travelling wave reactor also seemed promising in enabling the use of depleted uranium and would allow the US to not have to guard airfields full of depleted uranium as it is all turned into fuel. As batteries get denser in their Wh/kg they are very quickly becoming rivals to ICE cars for range.
I think there is a completely legitimate role for fossil fuels with plastics, and in industrial industries right now for huge machinery and things like airplanes or ships where you couldn't feasibly get enough battery power and have any sort of range, but when that is no longer true and it becomes cheaper to have batteries then it doesn't make sense not to switch. Especially when the ethical issue of Lithium mining is behind us, solid state batteries are on the radar of lots of major manufacturers and Neo is already talking about introducing them next year I believe.
