I started just as AD&D (aka 1st Edition) was starting to come out. 3rd Ed was such a departure from the core rules that I really didn't get it - if I'm going to switch to a whole new system (which is pretty much what you're doing 2nd=>3rd) then I'm going to switch to a DECENT system, because RPGs have grown up a hell of a lot in the past few decades :)
