TL;DR

  • No, AOC's location isn't the issue -- it's the timeline that's the issue. Why was AOC "scared for her life" at 1:00pm, over an hour before the Capitol was breached?

  • Why would anyone assume rioters were in the Cannon House office building when the Capitol hadn't even been breached yet, or when a breach was "unthinkable"?

  • Why would a Capitol Police officer knock multiple times without announcing who they are, or why they were knocking?

Hindsight is a helluva drug, and makes for great stories.

I'm going to use "mainstream media" sources to make it simple to understand why AOC's January 6th story is questionable.

According to her own account, AOC panicked at 1:00pm:

In her Instagram Live video, Ocasio-Cortez said she had just gotten off the phone with her chief of staff and was scrolling through lunch options at around 1 p.m. when she heard "huge, violent bangs on my door." ... Ocasio-Cortez said she ran over to her legislative director, Geraldo "G" Bonilla-Chavez, who told her to "hide, hide, run and hide."

People are filling in the blanks, concluding, "well of course she was scared! Rioters were in the vicinity!"

But that' odd, considering the Capitol wouldn't be breached, or evacuated, for over an hour:

2:11 p.m. The first rioters make it inside the Capitol building.

About 2:39 p.m. Representatives begin evacuating the House chamber.

In fact, Trump was still speaking at 1:00pm -- meaning that the majority of attendees hadn't reached the Capitol yet:

1:12 p.m. Trump ends his rally speech.

And remember -- the attitude at the time was that a breach of the Capitol was "unthinkable," and a huge security failure.:

Butterfield, D-Wilson, called the security breach “unthinkable” and “a planning failure” on the part of Capitol police and the FBI.

So why would anyone be "scared for their life"?

Funny that nearly a month later, Rep. Katie Porter, an AOC ally, "fully expected the building had been breached":

"I fully expected that by this point, the building had been breached and there were people walking the hallways," [Rep. Katie Porter] said."

Revisionist history, much? But that's not the point -- let's assume that AOC is extremely paranoid, and assumed the worst at 1:00pm. It's a stretch, but fine. It's documented that the alleged door knocker was Capitol Police:

She came out after her legislative director told her to, and a Capitol police officer was in the office. He didn’t announce himself, and he appeared angry. She said the officer told them to go to another building, but didn’t say specifically where or escort them, leaving her feeling unsafe.

So a police officer tasked with evacuating a building knocked multiple times without announcing themselves? Or announcing the reason for being there? Shouldn't someone ask about this?

The Capitol Police did not respond to PolitiFact’s inquiry about the evacuation.

Oh, of course.
