Look at how the Democrats handled the Primaries. They just voted for whoever looked like they had momentum and no one actually supports Biden. Look at how the Libertarians fled Johnson after his Aleppo comment. The fact a Libertarian didn't know the name of a city we shouldn't be concerned about at all wouldn't alienate ANY libertarians. But Johnson's poll numbers went down from double digits and he was irrelevant after that.
People on the Right tend to be more drive by policy than personality, so they have an insulation against this effect. Access Hollywood tape came out for Trump and his supporters just said "He'll still appoint a conservative to the Supreme Court though."
