I think at the most Trump was hoping for civil disobedience and not violence. Violence didn't really gain conservatives anything besides pointing out the left's hypocrisy which isn't anything new.
I defintely think the protest became a riot due to professional agitators. They were "bird dogging" at his rallies in 2016, why not here too?
And now Trump is between a rock and a hard place because if he defends his followers that went along with the agitators he'll look complicit in inciting violence.
