Even Governor Reagan had to ban open carry in California to placate the progressives of then. The Republican brand name is so tarnished in that state that it's easier to win as a Libertarian in city council races.
The Republicans would need 67 senate seats, and their record is 61 in 1921. Plus there's always turncoats like Teddy Roosevelt or Mitt Romney out for sabotage.
