I had a moment of clarity a few years ago during an argument (I lost) with a friend about "No such thing as magic dirt". He held to his theory that the peoples of exceptional countries and not the patch of dirt they settle on are what builds empires. I argued with him that America was great because it occupied an isolated land mass during the conflicts of the early 20th. I was wrong and he brought me around.
