Yup. MSC employee here, you have redundant chillers and dry coolers on the left, two generators on the right. This place was absolutely set up with redundant circuit paths that were diversified in their entry to the prem. Cell site signal being out this long is a fucking joke. If one of the lines coming in was cut, you, the end customer, would have never even known due to it switching over to the protect circuit paths. It's all a fucking lie.

Dude, when hurricane Harvey hit the Gulf Coast a few years ago, the cell sites were still up and running due to them having emergency batteries and generators running after the power was cut. And this was during the hurricane itself. I was blown away how hardened our systems were. My company lost one cell site, it was literally destroyed on the Bolivar Peninsula by a home crashing into it. These systems that are down are not as fragile as the media is making it out to be, they are actually extremely robust and durable.

When a cell site is hooked up to a switching Center, it may have several hops that run through different providers, like Frontier, Verizon Business, Syringa etc. All the telcos lease bandwidth to reach other, sand all have diversified circuit paths in case of a cable cut or outage, the traffic will just switch to the protect path. This happens all the time when a fiber cut or hardware failure happens and you never even know it. Now, all cell sites can relay e911 services regardless of carrier, so your Sprint emergency call will work on the Verizon network. What stinks about this whole thing to me is these switching centers have working and protect paths, and they are always diversified geographically to prevent them both going out at the same time. Basically the fiber and copper coming into the building will be on different sides so if there was street work going on, they don't accidentally isolate the region if a cable was to get cut.

Yup. It's a simple command that can be run on a packet switch, like an Alcatel-Lucent (now Nokia) to kill all 3g voice and data. Or for 4g data and voice, just shut all the ports on the router. Or even simpler, stop all the traffic on the inner-MTSO COIN links to isolate the MSC from the rest of the network.

Over 10 year telecom worker here. This whole thing is absolute bullshit, this 'outage'. MSC's (Mobile Switching Center) like this all have working and protect circuits, usually coming from two different directions. They do this so if there's some jackass in a backhoe doing sprinkler or utilities work, they don't isolate the MSC from the rest of the network. The fact that this is happening tells me one of two things: that At&t is not diversifying their working and protect paths ( highly unlikely), or this is all a big fucking setup to cover something else.
