I think it's a matter of balance. You should focus on bettering yourself through whatever means you choose, but you shouldn't shut out what is going on in the world completely.

In terms of these Christianity practicing folks they should focus on the world as well, because we live here now and our children and grand-children will live here. You can do God's work outside of reading the bible after all.

Read the bible and put those lessons to use. Find balance within yourself and within the world and get to work. Putting those lessons to work is what will counter that tendency to "leave it in God's hands".
