Carter literally gave away the Panama Canal. If it weren't for the US still protecting it, courtesy of the US tax payer, Panama would never be able to hold it. The US built it, why would anyone just give up the most important trade route in the western hemisphere? Love Carter as a person, but he never had what it takes to lead a nation. There's not a mean bone in his body. That's just one of his many blunders that threw much of the world into disarray during his term.
