When you're in DC you are surrounded by federal buildings covered in cameras, sensors, helicopters with thermal, and a host of other surveillance devices to include the eyes of about 75 different law enforcement agencies. I work with a few of these types. It also goes back to ties to academia. The highly educated, and especially the highly technical/scientific, put incredible amounts of stock in their reputation around the academic community because it is the foundation of their identity. Dissention in the ranks is not tolerated. You think as you are told or everything you've ever worked for becomes bullshit and quackery in the eyes of the community and you become an outcast.
For example, you write a white paper that you just know is going to be the thing someone looks back on someday to say "We've finally cracked the code on why ducks always quack on one foot. We couldn't have done it without this guys work, he will be forever cited in any paper about ducks from now on. He is hereby deemed one of the most important experts on ducks in the history of the universe.", it's peer reviewed, everyone loves it, your legacy is set in stone as soon as the next guy makes his breakthrough using your data. But... you accidentally say you're pro-life or not an atheist on record, or on social media, or to the wrong associate at the office party. Or maybe you think Trumps wall is a pretty good idea... or in my experience, you just refuse to say it's a bad idea! Well, sorry bud, but your work is now garbage. Debunked, trash, worthless. Washington's famous river crossing was the Delaware, but he did grow up a handful of miles from the Potomac river (his childhood home is still standing and has a hell of a split rail fence going on) and no doubt he crossed it hundreds of times in his lifetime, probably a few of those during the Revolution. He was actually closer to the Rappahannock river, which is a lesser known tributary to the Chesapeake Bay. I own land in the area and I ain't goin lie... sometimes I kick back and think about how there's a chance he hunted on my property.
