Well Damn

I've been saying we need our own things for years. We need our own digital platforms, banks, lending, etc. It's a shame we are tripping over our own shoelaces these past 48 hours. If anyone can figure it out in a pinch, now's the pinch and now's our time. It will shake out.

I agree with this 100%. I feel like I’m going NUTS every time I go out to shop and that is NOT right.

I REALLY like the sentiment behind this. I wonder...

As a mother and wife, I die every second of this clip. But as a mother and wife in this great country, I know my husband and children would be doing the same work. Thank God for real men and the families that raised them!

As a mom, I have worried about Kyle every day and every time I think of him. I will keep working to make sure my children grow up to be as strong, sure, and principled as him. What a milestone to work for.

Is that a guy trying to be a girl or a girl trying to be a guy?

Wow. That was funny until 2.5 seconds in.

I had no idea they were like that. When I was married (15 or so years ago), I got a whole closet of wonderful spices from them but had no idea.

It’s a company that sells spices of all things. It blew my mind.

Wow. Okay. I’m obviously boycotting them, as sad as that makes me, but wow.

I’ll copy and paste the email here:

Once again people ask, what does politics have to do with your business? Once again I respond, that in these times —Everything! We had tens of thousands of Kind heart pins that we were able to give away to Women’s Marchers the day after the inauguration because kindness is the heart of cooking. That they are a near-perfect symbol for the rejection of what the Republican Party has become is because it is the idea of caring for others that they are attacking.

Our business exists because Cooks see the value in caring about others and the better world that caring sets in motion. Unlimited political spending has driven the Republican Party into a world of hate and fear and promoting the belief that cruelty towards others, especially those less fortunate, are the path to a better future. Should that belief ever take hold of a majority of the population the core principles that make our business possible really would be at risk. Thankfully, at least for now, Republican beliefs appeal to far less than the majority. My thanks to all who have refused to be silent and have spoken out in support of humanity. You make us possible.

In the wake of the Women’s March I actually got a thank you note from Gloria Steinem for the Kind heart pin she received at the march. In it

In the wake of the Women’s March I actually got a thank you note from Gloria Steinem for the Kind heart pin she received at the march. In it she said: “I agree that ‘kindness can’t sit down simply because anger has stood up.’" She closed with: “Thanks for giving kindness a symbol.”

I have to admit I was happy to receive her email but not surprised at her agreement about kindness not sitting down in the face of anger. In so many ways her life has been a shining example of living these words which is so much more difficult than me simply saying them. She is an inspiration. The people running the Republican Party might be cruel, but they are not dumb. They know propaganda isn’t simply lies that can be countered by the truth. Effective propaganda comes from the intertwining of fear with the lies to make the lies unshakable. They knew early on their opponent would most likely be Joe Biden and knew for conservatives there’s not a whole lot frightening about Joe. So they did their best to make four freshmen congresswomen the face of the Democratic Party and then did their best to make us fear them. That Representative Ocasio-Cortez should so skillfully and so kindly use the elevated platform the Republicans gave her is America at its best.

Please watch the speech if you haven’t already, though I’ve found repeated watching no less inspiring. And if eve

Please watch the speech if you haven’t already, though I’ve found repeated watching no less inspiring. And if ever this year there was something truly worth sharing with a friend, this speech is it. Please watch, especially if you’ve leaned Republican in recent times or are worried about the future of America. Women have to work harder to be elected, those outside the majority even harder, but undoing the damage of the last four years won’t come easy. That America already has such gifted, kind, hardworking young leaders is something for us all to take pride in. Seriously, watch the speech.

And if you are placing an order tonight at penzeys.com to be shipped or touchlessly picked up in one of our stores, be sure to use the Kind code to get your free Kind heart pin. Words alone can’t counter propaganda. In its metal and its enamel are the persistence needed to make the difference. We have good Pepper, too.

And one of our customers objecting to our politics was also looking for a low sodium salad dressing base so I explained why I thought she was wrong and sent her this:

For a great salt-free dressing:

1 Tbl Pasta Sprinkle 1-2 tsp Justice 1/2 cup mayo 1/2 cup buttermilk.

Works with vinegar and oil, too.

Greek-style yogurt works in place of the mayo if you have it.

Thanks for being our customer, thanks for caring,
