He compared % of non-straight party votes for Trump of total non-straight party votes TO % of GOP Straight party votes to total non-straight party votes. Mathematically, those things are independent (maybe not statistically) Each can be any number between 0-100. To focus on the correlation he wanted to track the how the non-straight party ballot performance for Trump over-performed or under-performed the GOP straight party ballots. So he calculated the over/under performance by subtracting GOP straight from Trump non-straight. He plotted those numbers against the GOP straight ballot performance for each precinct.
If you expect that all non-straight party ballots will fall 50/50 no matter how "red" a precinct is - you could get a line similar to what he got in 3 of his 4 counties without programming. His theory is based on the assumption that non-straight ballots should bias directionally toward the overall bias shown by the straight party ballots.
However --- is this what should be expected? .. Either way -- it does not exactly make sense because weird stuff happens in the highly Dem straight ballot precincts as can be seen by the low correlation straight line for the left most side of the graph as well as the blob universe graph of Wayne county
