Up until the Dems starting blocking EVERY pick of Bush 43, the appointments to the lower courts were not terribly contentious. Democrats--as they love to do--trashed that norm of American politics and blocked everything under Bush. A last-minute deal prevented the R Senate from scrapping the filibuster for judges.
Then Obama arrives and starts picking judges very far left. And now R's decided two could play the same game as Dems, and they started blocking Obama appointees. Then Harry Reid scrapped the filibuster just in time for Republicans to take over the Senate in 2014. And there was no way the leftist Obama appointments were going to make it past them, given what Dems had done under Bush 43.
