You might want to avoid Apple because they are ridiculously over priced for what you get. Microsoft is clunky and slow, but are the most widely used and compatible. Google offer the chrome book, which are nice but limited functionality and requires an internet connection to function. A Linux system is an option but if you have to ask what other devices are available, I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t like the interface or limited range of apps.

Firstly, whilst you are correct. You don’t need to update your phones, you have made it SO MUCH easier for people to hack your shit... probably what you were trying to avoid in the first place. You see, hackers (good and bad) are trying to hack into phones every day and when they are successful they have generated an exploit if I am working with OS version 14.2 and you have 10.1 (because you are that duos hit that didn’t update) my exploit is backwards compatible, meaning that any version before mine is vulnerable. If however, you have 14.3 - and the OS developers have patched that specific exploit - you are safe.
Also open source means that I can see the source code of an application- be it a phone or even a desktop app. As a hacker this means I can white box the shit out of that software. I can see the code and figure out where it is weak. Proprietary software hides the code so I cannot see it meaning that I have to black box it (go in blind), meaning I am less likely to find vulnerabilities.

Hi... how can I claim my $10? The purpose of an update can vary, but the most common reason is to fix flaws in the Operating system security. You see hackers figure out where the OS is weak, and create exploits. Apple Pay people to figure out how to fix the weak areas and release the fixes at regular intervals- these are updates. PayPal or Bitcoin transactions are fine
