The mask's rating comes from a workplace requirements. They were never intended for prolonged use. If you need to spray paint on a car, you put on your mask, do the thing, and discard the mask.
I'm not giving any advice. I'm in agreement that the masks are BS and ineffective, but not because the mask itself can't stop the virus. It's just not the suitable instrument for protection, because it was never intended to be used for long. There isn't anything that's better and practical, though, and the (mandatory) recommendation to wear masks comes from the understanding that people can't wear them right, so at least with a mask on they will be slightly less infectious.
Yeah, and those are still large enough for the mask's filter to stop.

The viruses are smaller than the mask's filter, up to 0.3 microns in diameter, but aerosol droplets are several microns large. Big enough for the filter.
So in a situation where a person got ill, and while his immune system managed to overcome the disease, it fucked up the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys. The person technically is no longer sick with the coronavirus, but may die of heart or liver or kidney failure. How would you record the cause of death?
This is very similar to determining the cause of death after a fatal shooting. Was it a gunshot wound that ruptured an artery, or did the person just bleed out to death for some unknown reason?
This is not true actually. The packaging states the particle size that the filter is effective against, and while the virus is much smaller, it doesn't fly alone in the air. The viral particles are located in water droplets which are big enough for the filter to block.
So it appears that the mask is at least technically effective, HOWEVER, the mask was never intended to be worn for more than a few hours at the most, but people are wearing the same mask for weeks.
The mask has to be fitted and worn properly, but people don't wear the mask properly cause it's hard to breathe while wearing it.
You should keep your hands away from your face, but people keep fiddling with their masks all the time, having their hands in their face constantly.
The masks are ineffective solely because people aren't trained in their use, and just don't use them correctly.
