Do you think that cat scan machine is free? I’m not defending the system by any means, but your logic is way off. Third party payer (insurance) sets price it will allow hospital to charge. Every one is different, so hospital has to set their fee higher than the greatest ins allowable. So, whatever the difference is from the allowable, is adjusted off. But this is not taken as “a loss” as you mention. System is setup to make the “rich doctors” look like they are price gouging ppl. Truth is, if it were truly a free market system, then docs/hospitals could actually compete for your business as based on price. M guess is, the hospital will just have to publish the insurance allowables, which you could obtain on your own now as long as you knew what codes would be submitted.
