Honestly I think the only real damage colonialism caused was from taking off so abruptly (whether by choice or being chased out), and just leaving the infrastructure in the hands of a population who didn't have the proper skill to maintain it at the time, but didn't want to "downgrade" the standard of living back to how things were before colonialism.
