It occured to me a few days ago that while govt officials, police, military, etc. make an oath to the constitution, the average American civilian pledges their allegiance to the flag. In that pledge we list what the flag means; the republic, one nation under God, and liberty and justice. This allegiance is pledged and owed before even the oath to the constitution.
