Hello, avid gun owner and active duty military member here. It totally depends on where you are using it. For your home you cant go wrong with a shotgun a pump action remington or mossberg which are fairly inexpensive. I don't think cali allows concealed carry but if you are in the market for a pistol a glock is the way to go. A glock 19 gen 4 9mm or 45 cal are both good options just whatever you do make sure you take safety classes and go to shooting ranges as often as you can so you are as comfortable as you can be. Good luck I hope you never have to use it.
